Natural Bridge is one of the most famous of Virginia's natural wonders. But did you realize nearby was an extensive cavern system filled with intrigue and perhaps even a mystery or two? The Caverns at Natural Bridge are fascinating, and yet you might think twice about exploring them. Rumor has it that deep under the earth is something truly paranormal. Then again, perhaps this piques your interest. Here's more on why a tour of the Caverns at Natural Bridge isn't for the faint of heart.
You've likely heard of Natural Bridge, one of Virginia's most famous natural wonders, but did you realize deep below the earth was an entire cavern system?
The Caverns at Natural Bridge, much like Luray Caverns or Shenandoah Caverns, provide a fascinating insight into the intricate system of stalactites, stalagmites, and other geological formations.
Opt for a tour and you'll descend 34 floors beneath the earth. The history of the caverns is just as intriguing as the cavern itself and tells of paranormal activity and alleged hauntings.
In 1889, a group of explorers was paid a dollar per day to explore the newly-discovered landmark. After having witnessed the otherworldly beauty of this underground destination, they agreed that it was something that should be opened to the public.
One day, according to legend, the explorers happened upon a seemingly endless pit that sparked their curiosity. They dropped a few metal goods down the pit to see how deep it ran and were baffled when they were only met with silence.
Then suddenly, the sound of a woman groaning suddenly filled the cavern and the visitors were terrified. The noise got louder and the men abandoned their explorations altogether.
Decades later, in 1978, the former Buck Hill Caverns was commercialized into the Caverns at Natural Bridge. Tour-goers can explore this paranormal hot spot on small guided tours and experience the terror and wonders for themselves.
