If you are looking for something fun to do this month, look no further. These are some of the best events happening in and around Portland in August. Soak up the last of summer at one of these annual events that will prove to be loads of fun.
1. Obon Festival
This annual summertime Japanese festival celebrates the memories of one's ancestors. The cultural event includes traditional dance, food and taiko drumming. The Obon Festival takes place August 5 at the Oregon Buddhist Temple at 3702 SE 34th Ave.
2. North Plains Elephant Garlic Festival
In its 20th year, the North Plains Elephant Garlic Festival is a fun time for garlic lovers. From August 11-13th, this festival features live music, a kids play area and vendors. The festival is located at
30975 NW Hillcrest Street in North Plains.
3. Fossil Fest
This annual festival is hosted by the North American Research Group and features lectures, exhibits, kids' activities, and more. The event takes place August 12 at the Rice NW Museum of Rock and Minerals at 26385 NW Groveland Drive in Hillsboro. Admission to the museum is free for the event.
4. Providence Bridge Pedal
This noncompetitive biking event crosses six downtown bridges for a day of fun. Riders can do one loop or multiples for this traffic-free fun on the bridges. Bridge Pedal takes place this year on August 12.
5. Aurora Colony Vineyards Jazz Festival
Watching jazz has never been as sweet as at this picturesque festival at Aurora Colony Vineyards. The 1-day festival takes place August 13th and features Tom Grant and Kenney Polson. The festival takes place at 21338 Oak Lane NE in Aurora.
6. Oregon Handmade Bike and Beer Festival
Celebrating 10 years this year, this handmade festival features renowned bike frame and parts builders and local craft beer. This is a family friendly event and takes place August 12 and 13 at Cathedral Park Place, located at 6799 N Baltimore Ave.
7. Musicfest NW
Closing out the month on the waterfront is the Musicfest NW production from Pabst on August 26th and 27th. Featuring Iggy Pop, Beck, Nas, and local breakout star The Last Artful, Dodgr, this festival will surely be action packed and energy filled.
8. Faerieworlds
This mythic music festival is considered the world's largest fairy festival and features vendors, costumed fairies, music and entertainment. The event takes place August 25 through 27 at Horning’s Hideout in North Plains.
