Over the last few years, as outdoor pursuits have become ever trendier, the market for adventure gear has become saturated with high end brands and giant corporations. This big business can seem at odds with the goal of getting out there in nature, particularly for independent-minded New Hampshirites. For a breath of fresh air, head to the oldest ski shop in America, a family-run store that's become a small chain that works with those big brands without losing its unique Granite State sensibility.
Lahout's Ski Shop in Littleton dates back to 1920, when Lebanese immigrant Herbert Lahout started peddling goods from a horse and wagon. In 1935, Herbert died, leaving the business to his 12-year-old son Joe.
Joe became a passionate skiier, right around the time that the sport really took off in New Hampshire, He made it his mission to affordably supply the families of the Granite State so they could enjoy the mountains just as much as he did. The store took off, and now there are 8 locations in Littleton and Lincoln, including collaborations with a number of outdoor brands. But the company has definitely retained its family character through all the change!
As you'd expect, the selection of skis and snowboards available here is fantastic, and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable.
Their great gear offerings aren't limited to winter sports — they have kayaks, canoes, and so much more.
The clothing for sale includes all of the best outdoor brands, plus some seriously cool duds designed just for Lahout's. If you're looking for a bargain, one of their stores is specifically aimed at offering discount merchandise!
The original Lahout's location is at 245 Union St., Littleton, NH 03561, though the other spots are worth visiting as well. For all those locations and more history, check out their website!
