There's a reason Highway 50 is lovingly referred to as the "Loneliest Highway in America". Towns with actual populations are few and far between but that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of hidden gems to be found along this lonesome highway. Along Highway 50 is the quaint town of Austin. It's called a "living ghost town" since, technically, people still live here (192 of them, in fact). This rugged town is as remote as they come but it also happens to be home to a wonderful little restaurant known as the Toiyabe Cafe. As soon as you've eaten here once, you might just find yourself going out of your way in the future to eat here again!
The little town of Austin is considered one of the most incredibly preserved mining towns in the Silver State. Comprised of many historic structures and boasting a timeless atmosphere, this place is a wonderful gem along Highway 50.
It may be in the middle of nowhere but that doesn't mean the eating isn't good! Austin is home to the iconic Toiyabe Cafe. Many visitors wander into this old-fashioned cafe after a long journey on the highway and are pleasantly surprised when they discover all that this little eatery has to offer.
The restaurant just oozes an authentic diner vibe. It almost feels like entering a time capsule to a classic American diner from decades past. Boasting off-beat decor and a friendly staff, you'll be charmed from the moment you walk through the door.
As is typical with most diners, Toiyabe Cafe serves pretty much every type of dish you could imagine. Hearty breakfasts, stacked sandwiches, juicy cheeseburgers, and even soft-serve ice cream are available. It's just the type of home-style cooking you crave after a long day on the road.
Everything tastes wonderfully homemade. If you're unsure of what to order, go with the chili. You can't go wrong with a bowl of hearty and piping hot chili!
The cafe may be pretty plain-looking on the outside, but it isn't long before you realize that this place has a unique character of its own. The waiters are the type that know their customers by name and will interact with you as if you're part of the family. And if anything, the decor makes you feel like you're visiting a quirky relative.
It may be slim pickings here in Austin, considering the town is home to just three restaurants, but you won't be sorry that you went with Toiyabe Cafe. After all, it's always these hidden gem restaurants that end up surprising us the most!
You'll find Toiyabe Cafe at 150 Main Street, Austin, NV 89310. They are open every day from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm.
