The Drinks And History Are Flowing At Under-The-Hill Saloon, A Bar Housed In One Of Mississippi’s Oldest Buildings
Under-The-Hill Saloon in Natchez, Mississippi, is a historic bar known for its unique décor, rich history, and lively atmosphere.
There are a lot of historic buildings in Mississippi, but did you know one of the oldest houses a bar? It’s true. Located in Natchez, the Under-The-Hill Saloon was constructed centuries ago. Today, it’s a popular waterfront watering hole that serves up cold drinks, quick bites, and a whole lot of history. Take a look:
This is the Under-The-Hill Saloon. As you probably guessed, it’s located in Natchez’s Under-The-Hill historic district.
Built in the late 1700s or early 1800s, it's among the area’s oldest buildings.
In its heyday, the Under-The-Hill historic district was a melting pot for criminals, so it should come as no surprise that the saloon’s past customers included prostitutes and thieves.
Throughout the years, the building has served many purposes. Before becoming a bar, it was used as a brothel, warehouse, and general store. Today, it’s a bar that’s popular among locals and tourists alike.
Just one step inside Under-The-Hill Saloon, and it’s clear it’s not your typical bar.
One of the first things you’ll probably notice is the wonderfully weird décor, which includes everything from antiques and trinkets to posters and signs.
The ceiling is another aspect of the bar that’s sure to get your attention — and that’s because it’s plastered in dollar bills.
The monetary décor is actually one of the saloon’s signature rituals. That’s right; customers are invited to leave their mark by tacking a dollar bill to the ceiling.
There’s more to the saloon than historical value and quirky décor, though. There are also cold drinks and tasty bar grub.
Live music, which takes place on the weekends, only adds to the saloon’s fun vibe.
In true southern fashion, the bar features a roomy front porch with rocking chairs, which are perfect for taking in a Mississippi River sunset.
The saloon is open daily, from 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. For more information, call (601) 446-8023. You can also visit the Under-The-Hill Saloon Facebook page. So, did you know about this famous Natchez bar? Ever been? If so, what'd you think? Tell us in the comments section.
