Minnesota is home to a nearly endless array of tiny unincorporated areas, charming small towns, and bustling cities. Each is home to plenty to see and do, great educational opportunities, and wonderful people. But what about those places that are just a little bit lacking? Minnesota is home to an abandoned town that, while interesting, most people stay far, far away from. Take a look at Vicksburg, the creepiest abandoned town in Minnesota, which has quite an interesting story.
In many ways, Vicksburg is a typical ghost town in Minnesota but a few things set it apart. For one thing, unlike most of Minnesota's ghost towns, it lies in the southern part of the state. You'll find it in the southern Minnesota county of Renville. The nearest populated settlement is the tiny town of Delhi, home to about 70 people as of the last census.
Though Vicksburg is long abandoned, it still holds an interesting history. The town was founded in 1867. It was named for the surrender of Vicksburg, Mississippi, during the Civil War. By all accounts, early Vicksburg was a small but peaceful place to live. It even had a post office for most of its first 30 years, from 1871 to 1901.
During the 1800s, railroads began to cross Minnesota. Many towns were fortunate to be on their paths. But some, such as Vicksburg, were bypassed completely. Other towns on the railways thrived, but settlers slowly left the community, leaving Vicksburg as one of the abandoned places in Minnesota.
Vicksburg was completely abandoned by 1905. Little remains of this once peaceful settlement. In fact, the only real evidence of Vicksburg's existence? A tiny cemetery just north of town. We can only wonder what memories linger there. While peaceful and filled with history, some would find this to be one of the scariest places in Minnesota, thanks to its historic, abandoned state.
Vicksburg's demise may not be as harrowing or dramatic as many other ghost towns in Minnesota, but it is still an unfortunate story of what can happen when a settlement is cut off from modern-day advancements. For the people of Vicksburg, better opportunities sprung up elsewhere, and they were forced to abandon the town. Nothing really remains today, as it stands as one of the fascinating ghost towns in Minnesota.
Today, most people stay far, far away from this ghost town, likely because they simply don't know it exists. But those who have ventured to what used to be Vicksburg speak highly of its peaceful scenery. Have you ever heard of this abandoned town? Share your thoughts on this and other Minnesota ghost towns in the comments below. Perhaps there is another place in our state that we could name the creepiest abandoned town in Minnesota.
