Detroit gets its fair share of negative press. While we Detroiters are used to these less-than-flattering stories, we know the truth: our city is overflowing with beautiful spots to explore. If you’ve managed to avoid visiting these amazing locales throughout the Motor City, you’re missing out. Make 2023 the year that you venture into Detroit and experience our city through a new lens.
1. Belle Isle Aquarium
This one-of-a-kind aquarium on Belle Isle is the oldest continuously operating aquarium in the world, and its sense of history is only half the charm. Marvel at all sorts of marine creatures as you make your way through the building, which holds a beauty all its own. No matter what your age, you’ll be delighted.
2. Dequindre Cut
Put on your rollerblades or grab your bike: you’re in for an amazing journey when you choose to explore the Dequindre Cut. This urban pathway takes visitors through countless sections of public art, city-commissioned graffiti, and beautiful views of the city. You’ll enter near the Riverwalk and find yourself at Eastern Market when the adventure is over.
3. The Guardian Building
As soon as you step into the Guardian Building, you’ll be overwhelmed by its beauty. If you’ve never had the chance to see the marvelous designs and architecture that make this spot so unique, you’re truly missing out -- and we guarantee that you’ll want to snap a few photos before you leave!
4. Detroit Riverwalk
Our beloved Detroit River is at the very heart of our city, and there’s nothing better than spending a few peaceful hours along the shores. If you’ve managed to avoid connecting with our favorite body of water, we’re not quite sure how you’re surviving -- but a stroll along the Riverwalk is certainly in order.
5. The Ambassador Bridge
Sure, it’s fine to admire our wonderful bridge from afar, but there’s something undeniably special about crossing it by car. Plan a trip across the border to Ontario and see Detroit from this incredible man-made wonder. You’ll marvel at views of our skyline and the mighty Detroit River.
6. The Fox Theatre
The interior of the Fox Theatre might just be the most breathtaking spot in the entire city of Detroit. Ornate sculptures, vibrant colors, and seemingly endless lavish designs make this one of the most amazing venues in the world. If you’re lucky enough to find tickets to a concert or performance at the Fox, prepare yourself to be absolutely blown away.
7. Hart Plaza
There’s a simple sense of peace that accompanies a visit to Hart Plaza, which comes to life during warmer months as kiddos run through its beautiful fountain. From architectural wonders to one-of-a-kind city views, there’s nothing not to love about this gathering space. When living in the city gets tough, pack a picnic lunch and enjoy a break from real life in Hart Plaza.
8. Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory
Belle Isle is absolutely overflowing with hidden gems, and Whitcomb Conservatory might just be the most beautiful of them all. No matter when you visit, this delightful spot will bring you face to face with some of the most stunning plant life imaginable. You’ll feel as though you’ve escaped to a tropical wonderland.

9. The view from the Ren Cen
If you’ve never marveled at the Motor City from a lofty level within the Renaissance Center, you’re in for a beautiful treat. For a stunning view paired with a delicious meal, we recommend checking out Iridescence Restaurant, which sits on the 16th floor of the Ren Cen. You’ve never seen Detroit quite like this.
10. Detroit Institute of Arts
Art enthusiasts will feel as if they’ve died and gone to heaven with a visit to the DIA, which simply overflows with art from all eras and disciplines. Begin your journey by staring at the beauty of Diego Rivera’s "Industry" murals, which are certainly the DIA’s most famous attraction. From modern art to classical sculptures, you’ll find something to delight you at this amazing museum.
11. Campus Martius Park
No matter when you visit, Campus Martius Park is an absolute gem. This centrally located destination brings Detroiters together for all sorts of wonderful adventures -- so we’d be shocked if you haven’t yet explored it! From ice skating during winter months to a makeshift beach in the summer, there’s always fun to be had and beauty to be seen at Campus Martius.
