There have been enough zombie movies by now that you may already have a vague emergency plan for when the living dead come knocking. In case you're still wondering what to do in the event of a zombie apocalypse, here are some spots that may offer a measure of shelter and safety if brains become the next hot foot trend.
Side note: click here and here for information about how to protect yourself and your family in case of a real disaster in our state.
1. Bascom Lodge, Mount Greylock
If you still have a functioning car (or at least a sturdy pair of hiking boots) heading up to the tip of Massachusetts' tallest mountain may not be a bad survival strategy. The remote position makes it tough to reach from down below without a vehicle, and the lodge itself is outfitted to house a fair number of people. Plus, you couldn't ask for a better view as society falls apart.
2. Pilgrim Monument, Provincetown
If you find yourself in Provincetown when the epidemic hits, head to the top of the Pilgrim Monument. The structure isn’t easily scalable and the small, winding staircase to the top makes it defensible position. You’ll also be able to scope out any potential threats as they approach.
3. Gosnold
When your neighbors are after your brains, perhaps it makes sense to move to community of just 75 people. Gosnold is the state’s smallest town by population and it’s also located on Cuttyhunk Island. A tiny town on a tiny island? Sounds like a pretty decent hideaway to me.
4. Monroe
While we're at it, Monroe is a tiny town of 120 in the Hoosac Mountains. If you can't make it across the water in time, this spot is just isolated and unknown enough that you might be able to hunker down here for a bit.
5. Boston
Hear me out on this one. According to a recent study by CareerBuilder.com, Boston ranked highest out of all the cities in the nation for odds of staying alive during a zombie apocalypse. The study looked at each city’s ability to defend against the virus, ability to contain the virus, ability to find a cure and ability to outlast the epidemic with an ample food supply. Boston was named the city most likely to cure the zombie virus, which makes it a decent spot to hole up and wait for good news. If you don’t mind fending off hordes of undead while you do, of course.
6. Borden Flats Lighthouse
Besides the fact that this lighthouse is floating in the waters just off of Fall River, it's a doubly awesome place to hole up because the inside has actually been turned into a four-level luxury accommodation. While you normally would have to pay a few hundred bucks a night to stay here, during the end of days I'm sure the nightly rate will drop significantly. Load up on some long-range weaponry to take out zombies (or envious humans) headed your way over the water and you're all set.
7. Your Basement
Yup, you may be better off hanging out in the basement rather than venturing out into the zombie-infested world. "Experts" say that your chances of survival are better the less exposure you have to other people in the event of a zombie disaster or any plague-type situation. It may be a good idea to stock up on food and water (and maybe a few good paperbacks) and just ride out the storm at home.
8. The Notch Bunker, Hadley

Not many people know that Massachusetts is also home to an actual secret government bunker. Well, sort of. The Notch Bunker is located just outside of Hadley and was built in the late 1950s as a shelter for top military officials in the event of a nuclear attack. It was meant to support up to 350 people for just over a month. Though it's now used as a library storage facility for the Five Colleges, the Notch Bunker could very well make for the perfect place to hide out from hordes of undead swarming across the Bay State.
Again, this list is purely hypothetical and all in good fun. We're not seriously suggesting you make these places your go-to spots in a national emergency. But...it couldn't hurt to bookmark this page.
