There's nothing like a good general store. As soon as you step inside, you feel like you've returned to a simpler time. In an ideal world, every corner shop would be filled with friendly faces, wholesome products, and penny candy that actually only costs a penny or two.
Luckily, the 1856 Country Store in Centerville is still around to bring some of that old-fashioned hospitality and charm to life.
The 1856 Country Store is a charming country shop full of retro gifts, tasty treats and plenty of penny candy.
Its history actually goes back all the way to 1840, when it was constructed as a cranberry storage building to stash berries after the yearly harvest. In 1842, it was converted to a small shoe shop, and finally became a general store in 1856. It's been a Centerville and Cape Cod Landmark ever since.
Even from the outside, the shop still retains much of its 19th century charm. The cherry-red paint and bright white trim give it an inviting, homey look. You almost can't resist popping in to take a peek at the wares.
Once you do get inside, you'll be overwhelmed by the amount of interesting odds and ends on offer. Pick up an bag of "bog beans" (chocolate-covered cranberries), snack on a Cape Cod Beer porter pretzel, stock up on homemade jams and jellies, try old-fashioned "puff candy," and don't forget to bring home a sack of classic saltwater taffy.
If you don't have much of a sweet tooth, there's still plenty to satisfy. There are scores of locally made clothes and accessories, like hand-knit baby hats and sailor's rope bracelets, as well as spectacular gifts and gadgets like bayberry candles and retro toys you might remember from your childhood, or perhaps even your grandmother's attic.
Even if you don't go home with any purchases, the 1856 Country Store is still a fantastic place to stop and soak up a bit of old-fashioned Cape Cod ambiance. There are benches outside you can use for devouring your store-bought treats or just catching some rays. In the cooler months, you can simply get bundled up and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa while watching the snow fall around this charming country store.
