There is something incredibly comfortable and nostalgic about visiting an old country general store in a charming small town, and nowhere is that more true than Maine. In fact, Maine is home to several incredible old-fashioned general stores that will take you on a journey back in time. Today, we're taking you to a massive general store in the small town of Windsor, Maine (population: 2,575) that might just one of the state's most unique destinations. While this nearly century-old general store is undoubtedly home to plenty of history, it's what you'll find inside that will truly amaze you.
Welcome to Hussey’s General Store, a one-stop shop located at the intersection of Routes 32 and 105 in Windsor, Maine for everything you could possibly need.
Founded in 1923, moved to its present location in 1954, and still owned by the Hussey family, Hussey’s claims to be the largest general store in Maine — who are we to argue?
Their slogan, "If we ain’t got it, you don’t need it," is quite fitting of a store that sells everything from construction supplies and parts for old-model camping lanterns to home decor, cast-iron cookware, and children’s toys.
In addition to operating as an Ace Hardware Franchise, Hussey’s is known for selling a few very different things. Their "Guns — Wedding Gowns — Cold Beer" sign is so much more than a clever landmark that draws selfie seekers from across the state each year: it’s the truth.
In case you’re wondering, Hussey’s General Store sells approximately 200 wedding gowns a year, as well as supplies needed for hunting, fishing, camping, and construction projects.
Hussey’s occupies a whopping 30,000 square feet of space, and we could spend hours upon hours browsing the unique merchandise offered here — including groceries, sporting goods, clothing, and appliances.
If you haven't visited this old-fashioned general store, it's about time to add it to your ever-growing Maine bucket list. After all, there are very few places you can purchase a wedding gown and a shotgun.
Hussey’s General Store is located at 510 Ridge Rd., Windsor, ME 04363, and is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit their website or follow them on Facebook.
