Have you ever paid a visit to the iconic old Louisiana state capitol? If you haven't yet, you are in for a really special treat. It's truly one of the most fantastic attractions in all of Louisiana---and we think you are going to love it! Here's what you can expect when you visit here:
Louisiana's Old State Capitol is found at 100 North Blvd in Baton Rouge.
It was built in the mid 19th-century, beginning in 1847 and finishing in 1852.
The building is known by many as the Louisiana Castle and/or the Castle on the River.
It was designed by New York architect James H. Dakin, who created a Neo-Gothic medieval-style castle. He called the style "Castellated Gothic", referring directly to the large amount of cast iron that was used to create the structure.
Not only is the exterior of this building incredible, the interior will equally take your breath away.
There are lots of gorgeously decorated rooms and areas that make this place so special.
One of the most unique features is the spiral staircase and stained glass dome.
This 1882 statehouse addition was rebuilt by William A. Freret, and attracts visitors from around the country.
The building was restored in the 1990s and now is home to the Museum of Political History.
The building highlights the history of Louisiana politics, including a focus on some of the most colorful characters from Louisiana's political past like Huey P. Long.
There is also a four dimensional theater production that takes place in the museum called "The Ghost of the Castle".
The show creates an immersive experience for visitors looking to understand the impact this iconic building had on people from Louisiana, especially during the Civil War.
Beginning in 1932, the capitol building moved over to the one it uses today.
So the next time you are in Baton Rouge, make a stop at this gorgeous historical building. It's incredibly beautiful and special!
