Summers in Kentucky are all about sunshine, iced sweet tea, and fun, regardless of age. We have plenty of festivals, picnics, fishing lakes, and places to swim. There is no shortage of entertainment in the Bluegrass State during the heat of summer.
Here are 10 things you will want to do this summer in Kentucky:
10. The Festival of Bluegrass takes place June 11th through the 14th. It has been an annual event since 1974 at the Kentucky Horse Park Campground in Lexington. It always takes place the 2nd weekend in June.
9. The Reggae Festival is around May 22nd to 24th in Louisville. It is a great place to listen to some cool music and relax, just like Marley would have wanted us to.
8. The County Fairs are a much smaller version of the state fair, but they can be just as much fun.
7. Kentucky Derby Festival takes place during the last Friday in April up till May 5th. There are parades, a boat race, the running of the Derby, and plenty of food, drink and fun.
6. Kentucky Kingdom is the Kings Island of Kentucky and resides in Louisville. They have everything from fair food, to carnival rides, to a water park. It’s a great way to cool off on a hot summer day.
5. Camping during the summer is the best way to enjoy the great outdoors. Kentucky offers campers a view of some incredible scenery, from lush forests, to a variety of caves. Many of our camping sites allow RVs or tents; others have cabins with electricity and heated water. We accommodate both those who like to rough it and those who just prefer the material conveniences away from the city.
4. The Kentucky State Fair takes place the last 10 or so days of August in Louisville.
3. All across Kentucky there are great picnic spots to enjoy. Picnickers can enjoy the beautiful scenery or join in the Catholic picnic festivities. Either way, it is tons of fun for the family, or a quiet adventure for two.
2. Red River Gorge is the perfect place to go for camping out, cooking out, canoeing , swimming, and just relaxing with friends and family.
1. Swimming, be it a pool, a lake, or a river is a great way to beat the summer heat. Kentucky offers plenty of beautiful lakes, like Wolf Creek, Nolin, and Green River. We also have a renowned water park in Kentucky Kingdom, along with a barrage of pools and swimming holes.
If you reside in the Bluegrass State, you likely have some great spots to add to this list. Kentucky is an amazing place to visit or live in the summer, despite the occasional allergies. For those just visiting, make sure and plan your time around one of the exciting festivals, or just enjoy fishing, camping, and swimming. Whatever you decide to do, you will be sure to enjoy it.
