Back before bridges stretched over the great waterways of Kentucky, ferry boats would work to get travelers from one side of a river to the other. There aren’t many of these boats left in our country, but our state does happen to be home to a few. Located in the southwestern corner of Kentucky, the Dorena-Hickman Ferry is unique in that it carries you across the mighty Mississippi. This one-of-a-kind ferry boat adventure is an interesting excursion to take in this beautiful part of the Bluegrass State.
The Dorena-Hickman Ferry is a means of transportation that takes passengers back and forth from the small town of Hickman, Kentucky to Missouri. It is one of the few remaining of its kind in the country, and it’s the only ferry that connects these two states.
If you're heading to the ferry through Kentucky, drive to the small town of Hickman. The ferry boat is the main attraction in the area.
While waiting for the ferry to arrive, take time to enjoy the scenery. It's not often that you can get so close to this incredible river that's filled with history.
The ferry runs during daylight hours every day of the week, but it's best to follow along on its Facebook page (linked below) to ensure there are no closures.
As you drive aboard, follow the directions of the staff. The typical fare for an average-sized car is $14 and save your ticket - your trip back will be half price if you return on the same day you depart.
If you consider that the price of boarding the ferry includes sweeping views of the Mississippi, you get quite a scenic ride at an affordable price. There aren't many other opportunities to view the river and this area of Kentucky in the same fashion.
As you approach the ferry, look for signs that indicate hours and pricing. The first ride of the day departs from the Kentucky side at 7 a.m. year-round, but the last ride times change depending on the season.
