It might not be Halloween yet, but ghosts in Iowa are active all year. Whether they are friendly spirits looking to relive the good times, or tortured souls seeking to find peace, there are plenty of places in Iowa where you can encounter the afterlife. One such place takes it to the next level, though, offering the only overnight ghost hunt in Iowa in the abandoned Edinburgh Manor.
You can tell that Edinburgh Manor has a dark history just by looking at the building.
The land was originally a poor farm, where those who were disabled worked hard in order to stay there.
Needless to say, those who ran the poor farm did not treat their charges well. Abuse was common, and many of those staying here died before they could make their own way in the world.
After the poor farm was shuttered, Edinburgh Manor opened its doors as an asylum for the mentally ill in 1911.
Of course, in the 1900s "mentally ill" meant elderly, learning disabled, women for a variety of reasons, and many others who were otherwise considered impaired.
Patients here were treated terribly. Abuse and experimentation were the way of life, and those who stayed here never knew peace.
Edinburgh Manor was finally shuttered in 2011. Now, it's still standing in Scotch Grove, and it looks as if everyone just up and left.
It's hard to imagine a place more eerie than The Manor. Furniture is scattered about, the kitchen is still stocked with pots and pans, and there are still linens on the beds! But don't take my word for it — the Manor has been re-opened for tours and overnight paranormal investigations. There has been a long history of ghostly activities at the site, and the television show Ghost Hunters has even filmed an episode here.
As if Edinburgh Manor wasn't creepy enough on its own, the souls of those who perished due to cruelty at the poor farm are resting out back.
So, what do you think — are you brave enough to spend a night in Edinburgh Manor?
You can arrange an overnight tour for $200 — or if your group is larger than 5 people, for $40 a head. You'll have to email them to make a — contact the manor at [email protected].
