3. Whispers Estate
Known as the fourth most terrifying place in the United States, this place is known for its paranormal investigations. 4. Demon House
Although this house is no longer standing, reports of strange activity have still been surfacing since it was torn down. Zak Baggins, the host of "Ghost Adventures," still owns the property, which he bought to make a documentary about the place. He decided to destroy the house after the documentary due to the terrible things that happened to him (including problems with his eyesight), but some believe the portal that was thought to be in the house's basement is still active.
5. Butler Cemetery and Gypsy Hill
It is well known in the small town of Butler that the local cemetery is haunted, but fewer locals know that just up the road from the graveyard in the woods is an abandoned shack in an area known as Gypsy Hill. It is rumored that many decades ago, a group of travelers raped a farmer's daughter, so the farmers in the area set out to kill the migrants. The ghosts of the murdered migrants returned and killed the farmers one by one, leaving the land forever cursed.
6. Hatchet Man
Local hauntings don't always involve ghosts. This terrifying story is about two college students in Bloomington who went out for a drink despite warnings about a murderer. When one of the two struck up a flirtation with the bartender, the other went back to their room. When the roommate did not return, the student who returned to the room fell asleep, and in the morning, found her roommate dead in the hallway with a hatchet.
7. Central State Asylum
Opening in 1848, this prison for the mentally ill saw death and things much worse. These walls talk in moans and screams. Reports of chains jangling and whispers have also been noted. Many who died here were buried in unmarked or mass graves. Get more details about the hauntings here.
