One Of The World’s Most Beautiful Cathedrals, Florida’s Basilica of The Immaculate Conception, Is Loaded With History

Florida truly has some stunning places of worship, especially those that date back many years into the state's history. Whether it be the towering Memorial Presbyterian Church in the country’s oldest city or the Hindu Temple of Florida built in Tampa, there are plenty of architectural marvels that also serve as places of worship. There is another church, however, that holds both a historical place in the hearts of Jacksonville residents while also becoming one of the most stunning cathedrals in the entire state.

The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is one of the most historically significant churches in all of Florida.

This beautiful architectural marvel dates back to 1910, representing Jacksonville’s oldest Catholic congregation.

In 1992, the church was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and was named a minor basilica in 2013.

But there is more to the history of this beautiful building than what meets the eye.

The congregation was first established in around 1845 as a mission of a Catholic parish in Savannah, Georgia.

Their first church was constructed in 1847 and Immaculate Conception was designated its own parish in 1854.

However, the original building for this parish was destroyed during the American Civil War by the Union forces.

It took quite some time in order for another building to be planned for the parish.

Eventually, a second building was then designed as part of the Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine in 1870 and was finished with construction in 1874.

Again, fate struck a hard blow, and the church was destroyed along with a majority of the downtown Jacksonville area in the Great Fire of 1901.

The current church now was designed in 1905 of architect M.H. Hubbard and was completed within a few year's time.

The architecture itself of the church is considered to be one of the best examples of Late Gothic Revival architecture in Florida with a cruciform floor plan, tracery on the windows, hire spires, and high vaulted interiors.

Even the building’s steeple, which clocks in at 178.5-feet, is topped by a gold-plated cross which happened to also be the highest point in the entire city until 1913.
