There are plenty of serene places in Delaware where you can get away from the traffic and crowds for a bit, if you know where to look! From paddling through a nature preserve to picking crabs in a cornfield, we've got your off-the-grid Delaware destinations covered.
1. Blackbird Creek Reserve
Blackbird Creek Reserve is one of the most isolated places in Delaware, and it's perfect for a relaxing float or a paddle with friends. It's one of the lesser known creeks in Delaware, so you're likely to have plenty of space all to yourself.
2. Boondocks Restaurant
I can't mention places that are way out there without talking about Boondocks, which is quite literally in the middle of a cornfield. Get ready for some great crabs and fried shrimp, and bring a designated driver because their Swamp Water is one of the best drinks you'll ever have.
3. Prime Hook NWR
Prime Hook is less crowded than the better-known Bombay Hook, so you'll have a lot of space to yourself as you stroll the grounds (or paddle the creek). Keep an eye out for foxes, ospreys, Great Blue Herons and more exotic wildlife in this serene sanctuary.
4. White Clay Creek State Park
White Clay Creek is a great place to escape to in New Castle County. Yes, you can spend some time off the grid in Newark! Head here early in the morning for a sunrise stroll with nobody around.
5. Blackbird State Forest
Blackbird State Forest is a great place to camp if you really want to spend some time off the grid. The camping spots are all primitive, but there are a few adirondack shelters if you need to seek refuge from bad weather.
6. Bombay Hook NWR
While Bombay Hook isn't exactly unknown, it's such an impressive, isolated tract of land that it has to be mentioned. This is one of the most serene places in Delaware, and you'd be missing out if you didn't plan a few day trips to this beautiful sanctuary.
7. Sambo's Tavern
Sambo's is another crabhouse that's way out there - this time, it's on the Leipsic River, outside of Dover. Boat up or drive up, either way you'll have a blast with a rowdy crowd quite literally in the middle of nowhere.
If you're looking for a great adventure to take where you can have some of this First State Beauty all to yourself, you'll want to paddle the Prime Hook Creek - straight into paradise.
