Come out to celebrate Southern California’s ultimate summer tradition — the Huntington Beach Independence Day Event. It was launched in 1904 to commemorate the maiden passage of the first passenger train that linked Los Angeles and Long Beach. Today, it is considered the largest Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi River. Let's take a peek at the 4th of July in SoCal in 2024!
The 120th Huntington Beach 4th of July Celebration is home to the Surf City 5K Run, the Pier Plaza Festival, Fireworks Over the Ocean, and the Decorating Contest.
You can also join the many festivities hosted throughout downtown Huntington Beach.
Start your morning right on the 4th of July in Huntington Beach with the Surf City Run 5K. You'll run the historic route of Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway - the same route as the parade.
See the picturesque pier and Pacific Ocean as they glimmer in the morning sun. The races finish at Worthy Park, and the races start at 7:00 (residents), 8:00 (open), 8:15 (stroller), and 9:00 a.m. (kids).
To participate or watch the Surf City 5K Run, make your way to the pre-designed course on Goldenwest that spears through Huntington Central Park.
Also, plan to watch the biggest Fourth of July Parade west of the Mississippi River at 10:00 a.m. where you'll see plenty of folks you know.
Some of the features include members of our military, folks from local businesses, representatives from Huntington Beach High School, and the cool classic cars and other vehicles. The 2.5-mile parade route starts on Pacific Coast Highway and journeys past the Huntington Beach Pier and onto Main Street.
You never know what dignitaries might show up, such as U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Walter L. Riter, USN Ret., who participated in the 99th Annual Huntington Beach Fourth of July Parade.
He amazed the crowd with a large-scale model of the World War II battle ship USS Nevada.
The Pier Plaza Festival is an exciting experience where you can catch crafts and merchant vendor booths, live radio broadcasts and entertainment, temporary amusement setups and carnival rides, and food trucks.
And don't miss the official Independence Day Block Party on Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway on Friday, July 5th from 5:00-9:00 p.m. This year's event will close with The Ramsey Brothers & Redneck Rodeo.
We love the Decorating Contest for its artistic flair and how the Huntington Beach community prepares for the 4th at one of the best Independence Day celebrations in SoCal.
Take a stroll through the neighborhood to admire the creativity of home and business owners. The prizes for this competition include six coveted surfboard awards and a cash prize.
Before the sun sets, try to make your way over to the beach for an inspirational look at the horizon.
Fireworks Over the Ocean ties up the 4th of July celebration with a sparkling bow beginning at 9:00 p.m.
Join locals and tourists at the ever-popular Huntington Beach Pier for an unforgettable show. For an unobstructed view, book a VIP viewing seat.
