You'll be hard-pressed to find an Arkansan who hasn't heard of Thorncrown Chapel, and for good reason. This architectural marvel is hiding where one would least expect to find it: in the middle of the Ozarks, out in the woods. No matter your religious affiliation, it's a truly enchanting place to visit.
Just outside of Eureka Springs, Thorncrown Chapel is located in the most unforgettable setting. With 425 windows and over 6,000 square feet of glass, this architectural wonder has received countless accolades and been ranked among the finest places of worship in modern times.
It's truly a hidden gem, tucked away in the woods of the Ozarks.
Paved walkways meander through the trees, a clearly marked sign directing visitors to the chapel. On the brief stroll there, take some time to reflect amid the solitude and take in the tranquil sounds of nature.
It won't be long at all until you see the chapel, shrouded in thick forestry.
Anticipation builds as you finally catch a glimpse of the chapel. With each step you take, the forest canopy appears to part ever so slightly more and reveals the awe-inspiring design little-by-little.
Over seven million people have visited the chapel since it opened in 1980!
Once inside, you'll be able to truly take in the magnificence. Elaborate wooden trusses span the entire length of the building, reminiscent of the Parisian gothic chapel, Sainte Chapelle, that Thorncrown was modeled after.
Light fills the room, casting shadows and reflections that dance as the sun moves across the sky. No two hours of the day are quite alike here.
All visitors to the chapel will hear a short presentation about its history. There is no admission fee, however donations are accepted.
Everyone is welcome, whether you're looking to worship or simply admire the architecture and gorgeous scenery.
As the seasons change, so too does the experience of visiting Thorncrown. During autumn, enjoy 360-degree views of the striking Ozark foliage in all its gold, crimson, and amber glory.
Spring boasts vibrant wildflowers, and summer features lush greenery. No matter what time of year it is, each pew offers a front-row seat to the natural beauty everywhere you look.
The chapel is open to the public from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. April-October, and 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. March and December, with certain exceptions. Sunday services are held at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. April-October, and 11 a.m. only from November through the third week of December.
Services last about an hour and include music and preaching.
