What Are The Best Places To Explore Delaware's History?
- Jessop's Tavern and Colonial Restaurant in New Castle is one of the most unique spots in Delaware, with much of the 300-year-old building still dedicated to Colonial times. You can find European flags outside the door, and the staff is dressed in 1700s-style clothing. The food is inspired by the time period as well, with specialties including fish and chips or an authentic Dutch appetizing board with meats, cheeses, and pickles.
- Old Swedes Church is one of the oldest buildings in Delaware - dating back to the 1690s, long before there was a United States! Located in First State National Historic Park, this church is located on the burial ground of the first settlement in Delaware, and it can still be visited today. It has been restored many times over the centuries, but you can still see remnants of the original church - the Warden's Chest dates back to 1713.
- Hotel DuPont is one of the most historic hotels in the state, dating back to 1913. Considered the most elegant hotel on the East Coast at the time, it had a distinct European aesthetic and much of that charm remains today. It's a towering building with 217 rooms, a size that was mostly unheard of in Delaware at the time.
