Travel Back To The 17th Century By Visiting Delaware’s Very Own Versailles
One of the best places in Delaware to view stunning architecture and manicured landscapes is Nemours Mansion and Gardens, Wilmington. The mansion sits on 300 acres of land and was originally built by a family from France as their private residence.

It was originally designed to resemble a French chateau and is now open to the public, inviting visitors to view some of the original furnishings.
While touring the interior setting, view the dining room which features a 25-foot long table when all of the leaves are in place. The elegant and luxurious chandelier is also original and comes from Vienna. The dining room was a place where the family dressed in formal attire while enjoying their meals.
While taking a tour of the mansion, look overhead at the ornate ceilings, which have a neoclassical style. The ceilings are considered to be a work of art and contribute to the opulence of each room in the building. Many of the floors also have black and white checkered tiles, and the walls feature a faux finish.
Many original paintings can be found on the walls, which include a portrait of George Washington and Washington's mother. The lavish frames contribute to the overall appeal and historic design of the artwork.
Stop by the library while touring the mansion, which features close to 2,000 books. On the walls, you'll find oak paneling. This is also where you'll get a firsthand look at original paintings by George Romney and Lucas Cranach the Younger. The oversized fireplace is one of the main focal points in the room and features exquisite crown molding and a deep firebox that was originally used by the family.
While walking around the gardens, you can photograph some of the statues on display. The pool is the main centerpiece in the yard and is five feet deep, holding 800,000 gallons of water. Miniature trees and lush fountains are also placed in rows on the lawn and create a symmetrical design.
Your visit to Nemours Mansion and Gardens, Wilmington will prove to be memorable because of the intricate details and lavish furnishings you can get a firsthand look at in each room. Strolling the gardens will also make it easy to appreciate the manicured grounds and the preservation of the setting.
