Like everywhere else in America (and the world!) there are both good and bad things to keep in mind when it comes to the cost of living, salaries, and affordability in Delaware. If you’re in the middle of deciding to move or if you’re faced with choosing whether or not you should stay for the long haul, we have the information you need. The good news is that Delaware's cost of living is significantly lower than the other states on the east coast.
Part of what makes things easier is the lack of sales tax. Though some items cost more in the Diamond State, the luxury of not having to worry about sales tax certainly compensates.
In fact, the lower cost of living here has helped Delaware have the 4th highest rate of homeownership in the country.
For instance, if you have a particular need for a certain size house you'll want to make sure there are homes in your budget. Or if you work from home, you'll want to make sure you can afford the cost of internet or a co-working space.

The average income in Delaware is almost $55,000. That's nearly $2,500 higher than the national average!
A common method of comparison is the Consumer Price Index, or CPI. This index takes into account factors like the use of housing, medical care, education, and food. Delaware's CPI is 242. That's 4% better than the national average!
One thing to keep in mind, however, is that Delaware has a low cost of living compared to other states in the region, but nationally it is still about 13% higher than average.
Folks generally consider the housing market here to be good, meaning you can find what you need at a price you like. But you'll need to make wise choices about where you'll be living.
However, housing costs appear to be lowering. That's either a good thing or a bad thing depending on whether you're on your way in or on your way out of the Diamond State.
Either way, life here in Delaware is lovely. And to many, the cost of living is just one of the things they love most.
