If you’re looking for a magical holiday home tour in Delaware, you have to visit
Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library. Christmas at Winterthur is nothing short of magical, with elegant displays that will help kindle the warmth of the holiday spirit within, no matter how cold it is outside.
This sprawling, historic estate once belonged to Henry Francis DuPont, a horticulturist and descendant of the powerful and wealthy DuPont family, who devoted much of his time to collecting early American furniture and decor. Today, Winterthur is a museum open to the public.
It’s home to tons of events throughout the year - but none are quite as magical as Yuletide, which lasts from mid-November through early January.
Every year, Winterthur celebrates Yuletide with stunning Christmas displays throughout the former home of H. F. DuPont. These displays are often inspired by the Christmas traditions of the DuPont family who lived and gathered within the mansion.
Visitors can take guided Yuletide house tours throughout the Yuletide season to see the home decked out in all its holiday splendor. Each year is a little unique in terms of themes, but one thing is constant: the displays are always show-stopping.
As you tour the home, be sure to marvel at the details – like this tree full of ornaments donated by the White House Historical Association, with each ornament representing a significant moment in White House history.
The Dried-Flower Tree is a Winterthur tradition dating back to 1986. Winterthur’s Floral Design team collects flowers from across the estate before they wilt each year, and dry them. The preserved flowers are artfully arranged throughout the branches of the tree.
A gingerbread replica of the Winterthur mansion adds a touch of whimsy to the decorations. It took 150 pounds of gingerbread and icing to create this giant replica!
When you've finished touring the mansion, be sure to stop by the Winterthur Museum Store for a last-minute holiday gift or addition to your own decor at home.
