by Kim Magaraci Take This Fall Foliage Train Ride Through Delaware For A One-Of-A-Kind Experience
If you’re looking for a truly unique fall foliage trip, you’re going to want to travel up to New Castle County and board the Wilmington and Western Railroad during one of their Autumn Leaf excursions. The railroad itself dates back to the late 1800s and operates as a rolling museum, where you can experience the same routes that were used to transport goods between the mills on Red Clay Creek and the Port of Wilmington. The Autumn Leaf trains will take you through some of the most incredible fall foliage in Delaware, and because you won’t have to drive, you’ll be able to “ooh” and “aah” at all of the sites. All aboard!
The Wilmington and Western Railroad has been a rolling museum now for 50 years!
They offer many events and excursions for anyone who is looking for an interesting Delaware trip. Along with taking passengers on historic railroad routes, the "Autumn Leaf" tour will bring you through some of the most scenic Delaware countryside just as the leaves reach peak Fall Foliage.
Your train car will zip through Northern Delaware, showing you places that cannot be seen from anywhere else.
Between the hills, the meadows, and the forests of Chateau country in Delaware, you'll find small towns and stunning scenery, following the same routes as the earliest Delaware train travelers.
The Railroad offers two trip options. The first is the Mt. Cuba tour.
This 1.5 hour trip includes a 30-minute layover at the railroad's picnic grove along the banks of the Red Clay Creek. Pack yourself a meal (or bring cash to buy from Greenbank Station) and enjoy a peaceful meal at one of the most beautiful places in Delaware.
Your other option is the 2.5 hour, full length trip to Hockessin.
Travel the entire length of the railroad from the station to the quaint town of Hockessin. Your layover in the town is half an hour long, which is just enough time to grab a bite to eat or browse the local shops in town.
Both trip options allow you a unique fall foliage experience.
