If you’re looking for a truly unique fall foliage trip, you’re going to want to travel up to New Castle County and board the Wilmington and Western Railroad during one of their Autumn Leaf excursions. The railroad itself dates back to the late 1800s and operates as a rolling museum, where you can experience the same routes that were used to transport goods between the mills on Red Clay Creek and the Port of Wilmington. The Autumn Leaf trains will take you through some of the most incredible fall foliage in Delaware, and because you won’t have to drive, you’ll be able to “ooh” and “aah” at all of the sites. The Railroad offers two trip options. The first is the Mt. Cuba tour.
This 1.5 hour trip includes a 30-minute layover at the railroad's picnic grove along the banks of the Red Clay Creek. Pack yourself a meal (or bring cash to buy from Greenbank Station) and enjoy a peaceful meal at one of the most beautiful places in Delaware.
Travel the entire length of the railroad from the station to the quaint town of Hockessin. Your layover in the town is half an hour long, which is just enough time to grab a bite to eat or browse the local shops in town.
