Did you know that Delaware has its very own Derby Day? While it’s not as crowded (or expensive!) as the Kentucky Derby, Winterthur’s Point to Point Steeplechase is an exciting horse race in New Castle County, and it’s one of the best events in the country for a spring picnic tailgate party.
Every year on the Sunday after the Kentucky Derby, Delaware answers with an equestrian festival of its own.
Held on the grounds of Winterthur, a thousand-acre estate in New Castle County, the Point to Point is a steeplechase race and day of festivities that belongs on everyone's springtime bucket list.
The day is jam-packed with exciting events. There are four top-class steeplechase races, where you'll find the best athletes in the game racing at top speed over solid obstacles laid out over the couse.
In addition to the four professional and training races, families can enjoy the Pony Races, a Foxhound Parade, a Carraige parade, and three separate stick horses races for children, divided by age category.
If you really want to do it up, you can reserve a tailgate spot or tent for you and your friends. These spots are limited and include a certain number of wristbands, but they're an elevated experience that's worthy of the splurge.
