Geocaching is modern day treasure hunting! With the right app and a smartphone or GPS, you'll be taken to places in our state where someone's hidden a treasure! Each "cache" holds a log book, and most have some trinkets. Tradition goes that you leave a trinket in the cache for the next person to find.

You can find them at our world-class mansions, famous beaches, state and local parks, and in dozens of other places. For a good list of 'official' Delaware geocaches, check out this page. There are also tons of unofficial caches, and many of them are challenging puzzles that make for a great story. I once ran into a cache that was a scavenger hunt - it included finding numbers that were stamped into the bolts on a bridge, unscrambling the coordinates, and then finding the logbook at an old, abandoned grave nearby. Others I've found involve climbing under bridges, looking for tree knots, and discovering little-known monuments that are well off the beaten path.

That's probably because I love any excuse to be near the water! These caches will take you up and down the bay shore, showing off our quaint towns that you might not have discovered if you weren't chasing your cache. One great thing about this activity is that it really brings you to places you'd normally skip over, and you're bound to find a new favorite hiking or picnicking spot while you're out and about.
