The Delaware Futuro House Is A Quirky Home In The First State

Many Delawareans have driven past the roadside spaceship on Route 1, just outside of Lewes. While it's sure to catch your eye, did you ever realize that this oddity was actually somebody's house?

While most of us refer to the landmark as "the UFO", it's actually a Futuro House built here in the 1970s.

These oddly shaped homes were first designed by architect Matti Suuronen in 1968. Suuronen intended the Futuro houses to be portable ski chalets.

Very few Futuro houses remain standing today, and while they're all unique, they were each designed to offer modern conveniences in a minimalist home. You could say they were the first of the "Tiny Home" trend!

In this photo from the Delaware Public Archives, you can see that the Delaware Futuro House has been a roadside attraction for generations.

The house is still occupied today, so if you're going to visit, make sure to not disturb the homeowner. This one-of-a-kind roadside oddity sure gets a lot of attention.
