We’re so lucky to live in a state like Delaware, which is brimming with both natural and manmade beauty. Some of the most beautiful places you’ll find dotted across the state are the churches, many of which are historic. Cool Spring Presbyterian Church in Delaware, for example, offers a beautiful, tranquil setting for worship and for quiet reflection. It also boasts a long and storied history.
Tucked in the charming town of Lewes, Cool Spring Presbyterian Church dates back to 1726. It was, in fact, founded by Irish immigrants who had left Ireland...
In search of religious freedom. The town of Lewes attracted worshipers because there was an abundance of land. What's more, the religious freedom of the people was largely respected by the local government.
The first to lead the house of worship, Reverend James Martin arrived from County Antrim in Ireland in 1734. In addition to the church, the land also featured a cemetery.
Over the years, the cemetery would become the final resting place for veterans of the American Revolution and members of both the Continental Congress and the U.S. Congress.
Today, the historic church welcomes worshipers at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays. The beautiful chapel also serves as a reminder of southern Delaware's rich history.
