If you google Union, you’ll mostly be directed towards stories of a haunted cemetery, but there is more to this town than the folklore of the White Lady. This town embodies Connecticut’s dedication to nature preservation unlike any other. If you’ve been looking for a place to get away for the weekend, or just need to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, stop in Union for sweet unparalleled serenity.
Union was the last town to settle east of the Connecticut River, and it may have 30 square miles of land, but it still has less than a thousand residents. Like most small towns in Connecticut, things run on volunteers and the schools perform well because of the classroom sizes (and great teachers of course).
So things here are small. But Tolland County credits Union as "a tiny community in the forest primeval" in their guidebook. Maybe it's because only two thirds of the town are for people.

But were you wondering what happened to the last third of the town's area? It's all reserved! Bigelow Hollow State Park, the Mountain Laurel Sanctuary and Nipmuck State Forest all call Union home. Not to mention the Yale School of Forestry. If you want to enjoy and explore nature, this is where you go. I can' even believe people get to live here full time!
It's open season as far as activities are concerned. You can enjoy boating, hunting, hiking, fishing, snowshoeing and more! And while you're out there you might see a moose amongst the excellent birding locations. Honestly, this town needs to be your next day trip adventure!
