Today, the Nutmeg State is a great place for vacations. Whether you’re traveling from across the state or the other side of the country, there are plenty of wonderful getaways in Connecticut to enjoy. With all the people visiting our beaches and all the cars on our roads, it may be difficult to believe that just a few decades ago, there were even more travelers coming to the state. In the 1950s and 1960s, a number of Connecticut resorts popped up that drew wealthy visitors from neighboring states. So many of these farm and beach resorts existed that the area was nicknamed “Connecticut’s Catskills.” One of the more popular resort hotels from this era was the Grand View Resort in Moodus. It closed down in the 1970s, but the property is once again welcoming weary travelers looking to go camping in Moodus, CT!
Today, Moodus is a small, semi-rural village in East Haddam with a population of around 1,800 people. It was once known as the Twine Capital of America and was home to 12 twine and yarn factories.
However, the area was once the capital of Connecticut's Catskills. The city was home to several hotels in the first half of the 20th century, and one of the largest was the Grand View Hotel.
The three-story hotel actually opened up in the early 1900s, but gained popularity in the 1950s, particularly with Jewish families coming from New York City. The hotel had 42 rooms, areas for socializing, a massive banquet hall, and a swimming pool with underwater lights.
The popularity of hotels like these declined greatly in the 1970s thanks in large part to declining airfare making long-distance travel more affordable. Many of the resorts, including the Grand View, shut down.
However, the resort is once again welcoming visitors, now under the name GrandView Camping! GrandView now has cottages, tent sites, and RV sites instead of a large hotel, but the nostalgic, familial feel is still present.
This is such a great place to get away from your worries and go camping in Moodus, CT. For more information about GrandView Camping and the property’s history, check out the GrandView Camping website.
