Almost Nobody Knows That Parts Of The Iconic Movie Revolutionary Road Were Filmed Throughout Small-Town Connecticut
Revolutionary Road was one of the top films of 2008. The romantic drama directed by Sam Mendes received several Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. It marked the on-screen reunion of Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred together in the 1997 blockbuster Titanic. Revolutionary Road was a critical and commercial success, but did you know it’s also one of the most famous movies filmed in Connecticut? Like the novel it is based on, the movie was set in the Nutmeg State, and it was filmed on location in several towns throughout the state, including Darien, Trumbull, and Shelton.
The movie centers on the troubled marriage of the Wheelers, played by DiCaprio and Winslet. The two marry in 1948 and move to suburban Connecticut shortly after.
There's a nighttime scene of the Wheelers arguing in the car as they drive along Route 8 in Beacon Falls. DiCaprio even stops for a bite to eat at a hot dog stand (which is actually a farm stand along the route).
The Wheeler family lives in Darien, and the in-home scenes were shot in a real house built in the 1950s. The homeowners allowed the studio to redesign the interior of the home to reflect 1950s architecture and decor.
