There are a lot of beautiful regions in Connecticut, and one of the best for a road trip is through the Litchfield Hills area. We just recently shared a scenic road trip to some of our favorite outdoor locations in the area, but today we’d like to focus on the Litchfield Hills towns. These rolling hills may not have any major cities or beaches, but you’ll find beautiful landscapes and tons of charming small towns. We’ve put together a Litchfield Hills road trip in Connecticut that will take you to some of our favorite spots. Check it out:
The entire trip will require just under two hours of driving time. You'll be seeing several towns though, so we definitely recommend adding time to appreciate all the stops! You can check out the full itinerary on Google Maps. It's customizable, so you can add or remove stops to your liking.
Your first stop is great for those who love to hunt for treasure! It's right on the outskirts of the Litchfield Hills region, but we couldn't resist including it on this road trip. Woodbury is considered the Antique Capital of Connecticut. You'll find all kinds of antiques here. Antique stores are perfect for finding that perfect old piece that will finish off your decor.
Did you know that Washington inspired the town of Stars Hollow, where the TV show "Gilmore Girls" was set? The town is just as charming as its fictional counterpart, with plenty of "small town in New England" vibes. While you're in the area, make sure to check out the Hidden Valley Preserve. It's teeming with trails and has such amazing scenery!
We couldn't do a Litchfield Hills road trip and not include Litchfield! This little town recently made a list of "Smithsonian" magazine's best small towns to visit. It's filled with restaurants and even has a fantastic distillery that offers free tours.
Kent is home to Kent Falls State Park, which is simply paradise for nature lovers. The waterfall that shares the park's name is the tallest in Connecticut, but you'll also find miles of hiking trails and a scenic covered bridge. The little town is also home to Macedonia Brook State Park, another of the most stunning parks in the Nutmeg State.
Your final stop on this Litchfield Hills road trip is Salisbury. This little town is the northwesternmost point in the state and intersects with both Massachusetts and New York. Salisbury's White Hart Inn is one of the most famous historic inns in Connecticut: it's a great place to spend the night if you want some rest before driving home.
