The Little Town In Connecticut That Might Just Be The Most Unique Town In The World
Like most places on the east coast, East Haddam is loaded with colonial history and quiet streets. Tourists are attracted here every season, drawn by the riverfront activities and thriving art scene. But did you know its most famous visitor was the devil?
East Haddam strikes you from the moment you enter Main Street.
The view of the historic Nathan Hale Schoolhouse from the Riverview Cemetery immediately transports you to a colonial village.
From the swinging bridge, to Goodspeed Opera House, there are plenty of attractions.
The 18th century stylings of the town make it easy to get lost in time, and before you know it you've been swept up in the folklore of this beautiful waterfront town...
One of the most popular destinations is Gillette's Castle.
Sitting isolated atop a hill, this castle is a scenic retreat with stunning views of the river. It may also be the place where Satan once stood to look over his dominion. It's a fun place to explore because there aren't any hauntings, just a lot of myths. But if this is where the devil rested, where did he play?
Devil's Hopyard of course!
The name of this state park is no coincidence. Aside from being the place of phantom sightings and witch trials, it's also said to be sculpted by the hand of the devil. Evil gathers here because of the aura he left behind.
Even the beauty of the waterfall is attributed to Satan.
Small pools of water form at the bottom of each drop, gathering in the boulder's indents. But rumor has it those indents are actually hoof prints.
And then there's the village of Moodus...
This census designated place located within the town was named by the Native-Americans as "the place of bad noises." You can hike into Machimoodus State Park, where the devil's yelp escapes from Hobomocko cave. And these are far from rumors: the noises have been going on since the 1600s!
