The Breathtaking Historic Home In Connecticut You Must Visit This Fall
Like all of New England, the Nutmeg State is blessed with a fascinating past that can be explored at our many historic sites and museums. There are so many historic buildings in Connecticut that it can be hard to keep track of them all. It’s amazing to walk past these timeless places and think about all the long-gone people who have been inside and what kind of lives they led. One of the most beautiful historic homes in Connecticut is the Osborne Homestead Museum in Derby. This stunning building is open seasonally for tours, with amazing gardens that are open year-round. Fall is a great time to visit before the home’s interior closes for the winter at the end of October.
The Osborne Homestead Museum is located within Osbornedale State Park in Derby's Derby Neck district. This was the home of Frances Osborne Kellogg, a noted fighter for women's rights in Connecticut.
The house was built in 1840 and is a beautiful example of Greek Revival architecture. There are not a lot of details known about the earliest residents of the house.
In 1867, Wilbur Osborne and his wife moved into the home. Their only surviving daughter, Frances Osborne Kellogg, would become one of the most famous feminists of the era.
She was incredibly successful both as a businesswoman and dairy farmer. She ran several businesses that she inherited from her father - an especially noteworthy achievement, considering women didn't even have the right to vote at this time.
The interior of the home is decorated with the original furnishings from the time that Kellogg resided here.
The landscaping here is magnificent and the formal flower gardens are, of course, popular in the spring when all is abloom. However, the grounds manage to look even more magical in the fall!
We'd recommend a visit to this great historical home museum in Connecticut at any time of year, but you definitely don't want to miss a fall day trip here.
