If you’re looking for a spectacular year-round campground in Colorado, then you’ll love the Elk Creek Campground in Curecanti National Recreation Area near Gunnison. It has 157 campsites, flush toilets, water, a boat ramp, and more. Some sites even have electric hookups for RVs, and in the summertime, this campground has an active visitor center with frequent ranger-provided programs. On top of all that, you’ll be right on the shores of the massive Blue Mesa Reservoir where you can swim, boat, and fish.
Blue Mesa Reservoir is the centerpiece of Curecanti National Recreation Area. It's a beautiful place to camp.
This reservoir and recreation area were formed by the construction of the Blue Mesa Dam in 1966. The reservoir covers 9,180 acres and has 96 miles of shoreline.
The reservoir was built to provide hydroelectric power to the area, but it was also created with recreation in mind. You can boat, fish, and swim in this reservoir.
Although you likely won't want to get into the water in the wintertime, this area is just as lovely during the cold parts of the year. Many people come here to camp even during the winter season. It's quiet and beautiful.
