6 Silly Sayings That Will Only Make Sense If You’re From Colorado
Having been born and raised in Colorado, I always thought that I was exempt from having a distinct accent and way of wording things. As it turns out, every region has their own language quirks, and these six words and sayings are uniquely Coloradan and mean something a little different to us than they do to the rest of the world.
Yes, granola is a delicious combination of rolled oats, brown sugar, dried fruit, and nuts, but it is also a term for someone who prefers the laid-back, all-natural hippie lifestyle. Boulder is full of granola.
2. Mile High Salute
In this case, the salute part is what you would expect, but what makes it a Mile High Salute? This is when one of our beloved Broncos makes a killer play and then looks out and salutes the adoring fans.
3. Colorado Cologne
No, it's not the run-of-the-mill Chanel or Dolce & Gabbana; we're talking about the distinct aroma of legal cannabis.
Similarly, you won't find a "Colorado Cigar" in smoke shops outside of our state.
4. Toward the mountains vs. away from the mountains.
When you grow up in a place with such a distinct landscape, you tend to judge locations and directions based on proximity to our towering peaks. You’re less likely to hear the term "west" than "toward the mountains." If you are heading away from the mountains, you’re traveling east.
What happens when we find ourselves in a place without geographical landmarks to guide us? Well, let’s just say we’re grateful for GPS maps that can re-route us quickly when we’re totally lost and make a wrong turn.
5. Hitting the hill.
When winter arrives we hit the hills for a day of skiing or snowboarding on our snowy slopes.
It's not fine dust, but it
is a fine dusting (or dumping) of fluffy snow. Hitting the hill is especially fun when there are a few inches of fresh powder!
