Since becoming a state in 1876, the Centennial State has managed to turn out some of the best towns, attractions, and people in the entire country. While you may know all there is to know about modern Colorado, you may have never heard the stories from long ago, like that of Colorado’s oldest community, and you’re totally going to want to visit.

Originally named San Luis de la Culebra, the town was founded on April 9, 1851, making it the oldest town in Colorado.
San Luis was originally established in Northern New Mexico by Taos-area settlers who acquired the land from the Sangre de Cristo Land Grant.

Spanish settlers name it in honor of the town’s patron saint, San Luis de la Culebra.
The community actually began as a New Mexican town, but became part of Colorado when the territory was created.

Though only about 700 people live in this Costilla County community, there's still plenty to see and do around here.
The highlight of the town is certainly the stunning Shrine of the Stations of the Cross.

It is the oldest church in Colorado and can be found on San Pedro Mesa in the center of the town.
There's a short half-mile trail that will lead you to it, passing 15 bronze statues representing the stations of the cross created by sculptor Huberto Maestas.

Inside you'll find a beautiful collection of art pieces, many of which created by local residents.

There are several landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places around town.

The Rito Seco Creek Culvert (shown above) was constructed in 1936 as part of a Works Progress Association project.
When you get hungry, stop in for a slice at Piccadilly Circus Pizza.

If you head just a few miles southwest of town, you'll find Mother Mary's Garden.
