Tucked away in Montezuma County lies the extraordinary Mesa Verde National Park, which spans a massive 81.4 square miles and features more than 600 intricate Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings.

Estimated to have been created some 700-years ago, this historic collection of prehistoric homes is the largest archaeological preserve in the U.S. and became a designated national park in 1906 (under President Theodore Roosevelt) in order to keep the dwellings properly cared for and preserved.
