Located at the junctions of the Colorado and Eagle rivers, the Dotsero volcano is a 2,300-foot wide, 1,300-foot deep volcano that first erupted 4,200 years ago. Made up mostly of small scoria cones, Dotsero is hiding a collection of wood pieces which helped to date the volcano’s last explosion. In addition to creating the cones, the volcano also produced a nearly 2-mile-long lava flow, whose remnants can still be found on both sides of I-70. Known as being one of the youngest eruptions in the country, it is predicted that Dotsero will someday erupt again.
