Country Living just published their 27 of the Most Beautiful Places In America list and named Colorado’s Great Sand Dunes National Park as “America’s Most Beautiful Sand Dunes,” commenting that “While the Sangre de Cristo Mountains may seem to dwarf them, Colorado’s Great Sand Dunes are actually the highest sand dunes in North America.” Originally created as the Great Sand Dunes National Monument in 1932 and changed (by Congress) in 2004 to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, this incredible area is comprised of a whopping 5 billion cubic meters of soft sand. (Believe it or not, the area isn’t just sand, as underneath much of the sand is water, which is why the Dunes were designated as a government-protected National Park… crazy, right?) In addition to just these massive hills of sand, the Great Sand Dunes is also home to multiple species of birds, mammals, and fish, as well as hundreds of different plant species.

The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve Visitor’s Center is located at 11999 State Highway 150 in Mosca and is open 24 hours a day year round.
