In its heyday in the early 20th Century, Front Street was home to 13 saloons. Of these, 740 Front is the only remaining establishment. It was built in 1904 by E.J. Defrancia, the agent for Tivoli Beer in Louisville. Here, guests can still try drafts from Tivoli, Colorado’s largest brewer.
When you step into the restaurant, you will immediately notice a magnificent antique bar. The original cherry, birch, and mahogany bar was transported by wagon from Leadville, a town deep in the Rocky Mountains.
In the basement, bricked-off tunnels speak to the town’s Wild West history. Legend has it that saloon patrons could traverse Front Street completely underground and away from prohibitionist regulators. Since residents could not smoke in the town due to dangerous mining fumes, a spittoon fed by running water spanned the length of the bar. Visitors can still see this original feature, though it is thankfully no longer in use.
Good seafood is notoriously hard to find in a landlocked state. 740 Front’s Chesapeake Bay Oysters and Nova Scotia lobster make it a standout in Colorado’s culinary scene.
