It’s happening! Idaho’s very own Silverwood Theme Park recently announced that a new rollercoaster will be debuting at the park in 2021. This marks the first new addition to the park in a decade, and we couldn’t be more excited. Not only does a new rollercoaster mean even MORE twisting-and-turning fun, but the rollercoaster’s theme will pay tribute to an important part of Silverwood’s history. When it first opened in 1988, Silverwood Theme Park in Athol was merely a small local amusement park. Today, it's one of the most magnificent theme parks in the West, and it's about to get a little bit bigger.
The park recently made a big announcement regarding a brand new single-track rollercoaster that will make its debut in 2021. Named the Stunt Pilot, it will be the first new rollercoaster in the park in ten years!
The new rollercoaster is airplane-themed and it pays homage to a notable part of Silverwood's history. When the park first opened in 1988, it was the only theme park in the world that featured daily air shows for guests. It maintained that honor for eight years, ending in 1996.
These daily air shows were a major part of attracting visitors to Silverwood back in the day. Guests could watch in amazement as vintage airplanes performed loop-de-loops through the sky at top speeds. Although the air shows are no longer, they are still a treasured memory for many who were able to witness them.
The inspiration for the new coaster comes from these early air shows, and it will put riders in the cockpit of a Pitts Special biplane. Each train will hold 10 people and climb over 105-feet into the sky before the coaster "takes flight" around sharp turns and aerobatic maneuvers.
Designed to make riders feel like their in an airplane that's zooming across the sky, the new coaster is bound to please thrill-seekers when it opens next summer. It will join the ranks of the park's four other high-intensity rollercoasters.
