Dumas Is A Small Town With Only 5,000 Residents But Has Some Of The Best Food In Arkansas
Southeast of Little Rock and not far from the Mississippi River, you’ll find Dumas, Arkansas. In the past decade, its population has hovered around just 5,000, sometimes dipping closer to 4,000. Rural towns of this size are seldom known to have many options in the way of food, and restaurants are typically scant. But not so for Dumas! Perhaps because food crops such as rice, soybeans, and wheat have so long sustained the people of Dumas, foods of many different varieties are available here. The town features cuisines from Chinese to barbecue and much in between.
The Dumas Chamber of Commerce at 165 S. Main Street is one of few buildings in quiet downtown Dumas. This little strip exudes small-town charm! Stop in to find out more, and learn about the restaurants in the vicinity.
If you consider food trucks a feature of big-city convenience, disabuse yourself of that notion! While The Croissanterie serves the good people of Little Rock, it also makes stops in Dumas. The croissants and other bakery items speak for themselves.
While a variety of ethnic cuisines are available in Dumas, southern hospitality requires that old-fashioned southern cooking be offered as well. Barbecue, fried chicken, sweet tea, and cobblers are virtually ingrained in the community! Shep's takes things one step further, with Angus ribeye, seafood, and po'boys. Find it at 732 Highway 65.
Taylor's Steakhouse is all about the meat. Only the finest, most substantial are flamed up here, tender and juicy. Pick your own from large refrigerators displaying aged cuts, at 14201 AR-54.
Variety is the spice of life, and the food in Dumas doesn't disappoint in that respect. El Toro does its part, featuring fresh, spicy, south-of-the-border flavor. And that's no bull! Taste their incredible Tex-Mex at 718 US-65.
No food town is complete without a fantastic pizza joint, and Big Banjo Pizza is just that. You can get a pizza with thin crust or indulge in one pie-style, with traditional sausage and pepperoni, or their taco version, complete with a zesty sauce. Locals know that no matter what type they desire, it will be crispy and fresh. Big Banjo is located at 720 Highway 65. Or, visit their pizzeria in Pine Bluff.
For homemade sweets and desserts that look almost too pretty to eat, head to The Son Flour Bakery, 109 S. Main St. Breads, pies, and an assortment of uniquely decorated cupcakes wait to be devoured on the neat shelves of this bakery.
If you’re a foodie looking for an experience off the beaten path, don’t disregard Dumas! The town offers true southern flair in its food options, along with a medley of other restaurants to keep things interesting.

I am an avid traveler-- of both the United States and the world. My favorite spots are U.S. national parks, big cities, and anywhere I can practice my French. I have traveled to all but a handful of states and enjoy photographing the beauty I see along the way.
