Upon first thought on this topic, my mind immediately went back to the unanswered question of who killed Samantha Olson in August 2013. The young mother was shot and killed in the middle of the day at a busy North Little Rock intersection as she sat at a stoplight in her car with her baby daughter in the back seat. No one has been arrested for her murder. The case has not yet gone cold on Olson’s murder, and her story is a very important one to keep in mind for the sake of justice. There’s another unsolved mystery that’s been baffling Arkansans as well, but for much longer: A mysterious disappearance that took place more than 20 years ago that remains fresh in everyone’s minds.

Morgan Nick was only six-years-old in June 1995 when she was abducted after attending a Little League baseball game with her mother in Alma, Arkansas. Morgan’s mother, Colleen, was unable to find her little girl on the night of June 9th when she looked for Morgan after allowing her to go and catch lightning bugs with friends. Morgan was last spotted standing at her mother’s car at 10:45 p.m. that night by her friends as she emptied sand from her shoes. After the ball game was over and Colleen looked for her daughter unsuccessfully, Morgan’s friends informed her that they’d seen a “creepy” man talking to her. By that time, the little girl had disappeared. No one had seen or heard from Morgan since that night in 1995.

Colleen has ever since kept the strength going to search for her daughter. Age progression photographs of Morgan are released periodically. Last summer marked the 20th anniversary of Morgan’s disappearance, and Colleen, now a recognizable face in the movement to find and bring endangered missing children home, made a number of appearances updating everyone on Morgan’s case as well as bringing to light the stories of others who needed help in bringing their kids home.

The Morgan Nick Foundation, founded by Colleen Nick, helps grieving parents cope with the disappearances of their children. Thanks to Colleen’s efforts, Morgan’s story was mentioned on major media programs such as Unsolved Mysteries. The Morgan Nick Foundation itself was even an integral part of an episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition after the Nick family house was damaged in a water heater explosion. The Foundation continues to help law enforcement efforts to keep kids safe and to provide support to families of missing children.
The Foundation’s efforts have led to a lot of positive acts and changes around Arkansas. Missing child alerts in the Natural State are known as the Morgan Nick Amber Alert System. The Morgan Nick Foundation continues to work around the nation in an effort to maintain child safety and awareness. While all of their hard work is shaping a safe future, everyone still hopes and prays that justice is someday brought to young Morgan Nick’s case and full disclosure of her location is made known.
