9 Of The Greatest Mountain Hiking Trails In Arkansas For Beginners
The Natural State has no shortage of stunning mountains. They may seem daunting, but reaching the top of some of these peaks isn’t an impossible feat. These particular mountains have trails that are accessible to any skill level or age. Let’s pick a peak and plan a day trip for the whole family.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. While we continue to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, please take proper precautions or add them to your bucket list to see at a later date. This central state park has more than 40 miles of trails that appeal to a variety of skill-sets. Our favorite trail that tours the mountain without leaving you completely winded is the Rock Valley Trail with the East Quarry Spur. The trails create a 2.9-mile loop that overlooks the Arkansas River. We recommend this trail for families with older kids; but, if you're needing a stroller-friendly trek, the paved Kingfisher Trail is nearby as well!

Ricketts Mountain has a tiny but delightful trail that just about everyone will love. The Ricketts Mountain Bluffs Trail has gorgeous nature, views, and tons of geological formations that really rock! The actual hike only takes about 30 minutes, but it's easy to spend a few hours playing on the massive boulders.

Arkansas' oldest state park has plenty of treasured trails zigzagging around the mountain. These paths lead to waterfalls, rock caves, and endless bluff views. An easier trail that doesn't disappoint in views is Bear Cave Trail. It's an easy 1.1-mile out-and-back trek that takes you through massive crags and beautiful overlooks of the valley.

For a different experience, try a family picnic over at Reed Mountain Park. This area has a lovely little nature trail with no shortage of views as well as a playground. The River Bluff Nature Trail is just under a mile and accessible to children and dogs.

We're never ceased to be amazed that Arkansas has a stunning island trail on a gorgeous mountain. Take a boat to Sugar Loaf Mountain and have an island adventure along this 2.5-mile long trail. The trail is moderate for it's elevation but the path is well-maintained.

Let's return to our magnificent state park system for another family-friendly mountain trail. Mount Nebo has strenuous treks as well as well-paced hikes around the rim. The Bench Trail is the easiest mountain loop around Nebo. It's 3.6-miles long and has tons of picture-perfect vistas.

You don't have to leave all of civilization behind to explore one of the mountains in Arkansas. The stunning bluffs can be reached within city limits when you're visiting Hot Springs National Park. The Peak Trail will take you up to Mountain Tower, a famous 185-ft. tall tower that overlooks the entire city. The trail is 1.3-miles and to enter the tower it's $8 for ages 12 and up.

Reaching the top of the world isn't out of reach at Signal Hill. This is one of the trails found at Mount Magazine just outside of Paris. Signal Hill is the highest point in Arkansas, standing at 2,753 miles. The peak is only 1.5 miles up the hill.

This Arkansas icon has been deemed the best place for a selfie as well as the most romantic spot in the state. Also known as Hawksbill Crag, Whitaker Point Trail is 3.6-miles out-and-back. Always be mindful of your group around the bluff!
