Everyone In Arizona Should Take This Underappreciated Scenic Drive

Petrified Forest Scenic Drive winds through one of our most incredible national parks, studded with mesmerizing badland vistas for as far as the eye can see. Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!
Traversing the vast and enchanting badlands of the Painted Desert, the Petrified Forest Scenic Drive spans just under 30 miles. Portions of it merge with historic Route 66, so you'll be whisked back in time to the Mother Road's heyday while admiring some of the most striking scenery Arizona has to offer.
Based on this picture alone, you can tell there's no sign of civilization for miles.
Petrified Forest National Park is massive, and exploring it all on foot would be next to impossible. This route, for the most part, leads straight through the park, so you can hit all the high points in just a couple hours.
As you pass by the park's south entrance, notice all the petrified logs scattered about. They're absolutely mesmerizing, and while removing any from the grounds is strictly prohibited, you can purchase some at a nearby gift shop.
An ever-changing landscape offers a surprise at every turn. From undulating, ancient bluffs whose layers formed over many eons to wide open plains, the shifts in topography are truly amazing.
The drive keeps you on your toes, never quite knowing what to expect. Boredom is essentially impossible!
While exploring this unique terrain via car is already an incredible enough experience, nothing compares to fully immersing yourself in nature. Several hikes, including the popular Blue Mesa Trail, are easy to access from the road.
Just pull over, hit the trail, hop back in your car, and do it all over again 'till your heart's content.
Scenic overlooks and quirky roadside attractions abound -- this is Route 66 country, after all! From classic cars left to decay in the elements to signs offering fun facts about the natural features, there's a little bit of everything along this road.
It's a good thing the drive is so short, as you'll undoubtedly make several stops.
One of the neatest things about Petrified Forest Scenic Drive is how versatile it is. Whether the ground is parched or covered in snow, these ancient lands never cease to amaze with their boundless beauty.
Plus, since you're in the car, there's no need to worry about the temperature. Just skip the trails and lookout points if it's too chilly (or stifling).
The drive is point-to-point, so feel free to start at either end. If your journey begins at the south side, you'll hop on Interstate 180 until you reach Petrified Forest Road. The northern terminus is just before the Purple Heart Trail on I-40.
