Crook Tunnel Is A Haunted Abandoned Railroad Track In Arizona
Arizona is no stranger to folklore. Cursed mines with hidden treasure, haunted hotels, and abandoned jails where the vengeful spirits of former prisoners run amok are just a few examples of the alleged paranormal activity that goes on in our state. One more place we can add to the list is Crook Tunnel. This former railroad thoroughfare has born witness to several tragedies, visitors report all sorts of unexplained phenomena.
Considering how remote the tunnel is, you'll have to traverse a pretty gravel road en route.
It's highly unlikely that you'll encounter many other vehicles; a perk only serving to enhance the spookiness.
Crook Tunnel was built in 1902, and tragedy struck a mere three years later.
As a train was traveling through, several large rocks lost their holding and collided with it. It is unknown whether the passengers were killed or not, but traffic was unable to pass through for some time until the boulders were removed.
In 1912, another catastrophe took place.
A man by the name of Henry Marks was hit by an oncoming train, his body left to rot in the passageway until a few unfortunate souls stumbled upon it later that evening.
When Marks was found, it was a quite grisly sight to behold.
Both of his arms and legs were broken, and one was nearly severed.
Today, ghost stories abound regarding whether vengeful spirits lurk within the darkest depths of the tunnel.
Those brave enough to visit have reported seeing an unexplained light, such as that of a locomotive, even after night has fallen.
Heading out the other side, listen carefully for the sound of footsteps crunching behind you.
It just might be Mr. Marks looking to get even with the conductor responsible for his death...
You'll find Crook Tunnel in Benson, about 45 miles east of Tucson.
Feel free to visit any time you like, however, we recommend a daytime trip for safety.
