A few months ago, Only In Arizona highlighted some historic towns found across the state and we knew these places were pretty darn special. But did you know that one of them was recently voted as the Best Historic Small Town in the nation? If you’ve ever visited or lived in Bisbee, you probably wouldn’t be surprised to know it was awarded this top-notch award.
Awarded through popular vote in USA Today’s 10 Best list, Bisbee beat 19 other similar towns including popular locations like Williamsburg, Virginia. So what exactly led people to vote this tiny town as a national favorite? As you’ll see below, it’s a combination of its rich history, good looks, and small town charm.
Founded in 1880, Bisbee is located just a few short miles from the Mexican border and rests between rolling hills rich in minerals. Copper, silver, and lead were especially (and profitable) but other minerals like turquoise and malachite have been extracted from the area, leading Bisbee to be one of the most profitable mining towns in Arizona. It’s estimated that the town has mined more than $6.1 billion in minerals over the decades.
The town is picturesque thanks to its well-preserved Victorian-style architecture that looks pretty today but it also catered to a rough-and-tumble crowd of miners who participated in some rather uncouth activities. Bisbee was also designed well before the automobile ever took off, so streets and buildings are pedestrian friendly especially in the historic areas.
Bisbee is also a quirky little place. Back when the town was experiencing a major population decline, it became a prime destination for hippies and artists. That counter culture is still very much alive here, as you can tell by the photos above.
All of these, including a great foodie culture and various festivals, has led many travelers to this interesting little town. So, what are you waiting for? You should pay the town a visit while the weather is still good!
Have you been to the ever lovely Bisbee? We’d love to hear your favorite memories of the town and what you love best about it!
