Utqiagvik is the northernmost community in the United States, and one of the most unique and interesting towns in the world. Located on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, this spot has a fascinating geography and rich culture that comes from living on what feels like the edge of the world.

This small town of nearly 4,000 residents was first incorporated as a first class city in 1959.

However, the Birnick archaeological site in town contains 16 dwellings of an ancient culture that archeologists believed lived in this area from 500-900 AD. The Iñupiat people have lived in this area for almost 1,500 years.
The area is a polar climate, and can dip into temperatures of thirty and forty below during very cold winters.

Throughout the summer the temperature hovers at just above freezing. As one of the cloudiest locations on the planet, about 50% of the year is overcast.
This area is actually what they call an "ice desert."

The entire area receives very little snow or precipitation. In the winter, the sun famously sets for 66 days before rising again. In the summer, the midnight sun makes an appearance for a glorious 80 days.

You can hire a tour guide to explore the surrounding areas, and take a tour on the nearby tundra. Or visit Iñupiat Heritage Center, which showcases Iñupiat displays and unique artifacts.
Many cultural traditions are still practiced in this area, and substance fishing, hunting, and whaling are important to the local economy.

Strolling around town, you'll also find drying racks where you can see food items like reindeer jerky drying in the sun.
One of the most iconic sights of Utqiagvik is the arch made of whale bones and whaling boat frames.

It highlights the view of the Chukchi Sea. It's a great spot to see the large oil tankers that pass by in the summer, and offers a view of the endless horizon in the winter.
