The Most Enchanting Highway In Alaska That’s Worth A Trip From Anywhere In The State
Alaska may have only a few highways that run through the state, but they are all gorgeous! One, however, beats them all with show-stopping views. The Top Of The World Highway takes you from Dawson City, Yukon to the Jack Wade Junction in Alaska, and you truly feel like you’re driving on top of the world!
The Top Of The World Highway runs from Dawson City, Yukon in Canada to the Jack Wade Junction in Alaska. It has been in existence since 1955.
The highway is actually made up of two highways! The Yukon Highway 9 in Canada joins the Taylor Highway in Alaska, to form one long scenic road.
This drive is a must-see for roadtrippers!
It's very popular with the RVing and motorcycling crowd. There are long stretches between very small towns, and the highway is usually empty of travelers, which makes for a lovely drive.
The Top of the World Highway runs along the crest of hills, looking down into the valleys on either side of the road.
This is how the highway got it's name! The Top of the World Highway earns its namesake due to the views, and the fact that it is one of the northerly highways in the world.
The road is actually closed in the winter, but many still use it for snowmobile travel.
Due to the lack of trees on this highway, officials do discourage even snowmobile usage. As soon as the snow begins to melt, however, feel free to drive to your heart's content!
There is a beautiful area for photos on the Alaska-Canada border.
The road conditions after the Canadian border and into the Yukon can be a little rough, as it is unpaved. Be sure to check the Milepost or other road highway guides about gas station stops and tire repair, just in case!
When you arrive at the Yukon River, you will need to take the George Black Ferry.
The ferry is free, and runs 24 hours a day! In the winter, many locals just drive their cars or snowmobiles across the ice. When you arrive in Dawson City, make sure to try the Sourtoe Cocktail at the Sourdough Saloon!
